Spanish as a Foreign Language

Here I would like to expatiate why I chose to learn Spanish, in particular, as a foreign language.

Until December 2006, it had been my unfulfilled desire to learn and master a foreign language. My parents have always been considering learning a foreign language as a colossal waste of time, energy and captial. On the other hand, I have always been having an inclination to learn and master as many languages as possible. I find immense happiness in doing so.

But their constant discouragement didn't set me aback. On the contrary, it boosted my spirits. I fervently decided to learn and master a foreign language and prove them totally wrong.

I was bewildered to choose between French, German, Russian and Spanish. I sought the help of search engines to find a solution for my bewilderment. While surfing the net, I came across so many facts which ultimately made me to choose Spanish.

Let me narrate the basic facts now. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world with approximately 500 million speakers(Mandarin dialect of Chinese stands first). So, one basic fact is that Spanish speakers outnumber English speakers.

Spanish has been recognized as one of the six official lanugages of the United Nations. The other five are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French and Russian.

Also, Spanish serves as the official language of about twenty-five countries in the world. Some of them are: Spain, Mexico, the whole of the South American continent(other than Brazil) like Bolivia, Gautemala, Hondruas, Panama, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru. In the United States, Spanish has been officially recognized as the second language.

Spanish and Portugese are mutually intelligible languages. Hence, Spanish is widely understood in Portugese speaking conturies like Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique etc.

The aforesaid reasons drove me to start learning Spanish as a foreign language. Now let me share with you all, the fact, that how I am at an advantageous position with my knowledge in Spanish.

I now possess "Diploma in Spanish". I studied "Spanish as a Foreign Language" at "Instituto Hispania", India(http://institutohispania.com/index.html)

Instituto Hispania is obviously the top ranking institute for learning Spanish. The management of the institute does commendable service in promoting Spanish language in India. I would strongly recommend the people of India to learn Spanish at any one of the branches of Instituo Hispania.

By virtue of my knowledge in Spanish, my English word robe has increased by leaps and bounds. It is because of the fact that Spanish is actually an offshoot of Latin and Latin has a telling influence in English.

I would like to corroborate this statement with an example. In Spanish, the word "Salud" refers to "Health". Once, while going through an article in English, I came across the word "Salubrious". With out even refering to the dictionary, I could make out that it would mean something related to health. Spanish and English possess innumerable identical and similar words.

Also, now since I know Spanish, I am able to understand Portugese, Italian and French.

The aforesaid three languages along with Spanish fall under one language family.

Now, by the Grace of The Almighty I have been living in a country for almost a year where Spanish has been given the status of second language. Here, I end up conversing in Spanish with the native speakers of the language and consequently I have won the hearts of innumerable native speakers of Spanish.

Summing up, I would sincerely recommend those Indians, who have an inclination to learn new languages, to learn Spanish at the outset.

In this post, I wish to share my meagre knowledge in Spanish with you all in a different manner. This post is going to reveal the influence of Sanskrit on Spanish language. Because of the proximity of Hindi to Sanskrit, here, I have used Hindi words also and have referred those words as Sanskrit words.

Case - 1:

Spanish: La naranja - the orange (fruit)
Sanskrit: Narangi - orange fruit

Case - 2:

Spanish: puro - full
Sanskrit: pura - full

Case - 3:

Spanish: madura - ripe (For example: la fruta madura - the ripe fruit)
Sanskrit: maduram - sweet, honey like

Case - 4:

Spanish: el diente - the tooth
Sanskrit: dantha - tooth

Case - 5:

Spanish: el nombre - the name
Sanskrit: naam - name

Case - 6:

Spanish: la pierna - the leg
Sanskrit: pai-ir - leg

நான் 17.01.2008 நாளிட்ட "தி இந்து" ஆங்கில நாளிதழில் கீழ்காணும் செய்தியினைப் படிக்க நேர்ந்தது. அதில் இலண்டன் வாழ் இலங்கைத் தமிழர்களின் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட கூட்டமைப்பின் தலைவரான இவான் பெத்ரோபிள்ளை என்பவர் பின்வருமாறு அறிக்கைவிடுத்திருந்தார்:

"தமிழர்கள் அனைவரும் இலங்கை அரசால் இயக்கப்படும் வானூர்திகளைப் புறக்கணிக்க வேண்டும். ஏனெனில், இலங்கை அரசு வானூர்திகளை நம்மைப் போன்ற புலம் பெயர்ந்த தமிழர்களே பெருமளவில் பயன்படுத்துகின்றனர். அதனால் இலங்கை அரசிற்கு ஓர் ஆண்டிற்குத் தமிழர்கள் ஈட்டித்தரும் வருவாய் 1,20,00,000 பவுண்டுகளாகும்(12 million pounds). தமிழர்களால் அடையும் இவ்வருவாயினை அவர்கள் தமிழர்களை அழிப்பதற்கே பயன்படுத்துகின்றனர். மேலும், இலங்கைக்குச் சுற்றுலா பயணம் செல்வதையும் தவிர்ப்பீராக".

நான் தற்போது என்ன வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்க விழைகிறேன் என்றால் இந்தியத் தமிழர்களாகிய நாமும் நம் இலங்கைத் தமிழ் உடன்வயிற்றோர்களுக்கு(சகோதரர்களுக்கு) கை கொடுப்போம். நம்மில் பலர் சில ஆயிரம் ரு°பாய்களைச் சேமிக்கும் பொருட்டு, சிங்கப்பூர், சவுதி அரேபியா மற்றும் பல ஆசிய நாடுகளுக்குச் செல்லும்போது இலங்கை அரசு வானூர்திகளைப் பயன்படுத்துகின்றோம். இனி, அதனை முற்றிலும் தவிர்த்து நம் இந்திய அரசு வானூர்திகளையே பயன்படுத்துமாறு பணிவன்புடன் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன். இதனால் நாம் நம் தமிழ் இனத்தை காப்பது மட்டுமின்றி நம் அரசிற்கும் பெருத்த வருவாயினை ஈட்டித்தருகிறோம். தமிழர்கள் அனைவரும் இதில் தன்னல நோக்குடன் செயல்படாமல் பொதுநல நோக்குடன் செயல்படுதல் சாலச் சிறந்ததாகும்.

பேரறிஞர் அண்ணாவின் அரசியல் நையாண்டி

கீழ்க்காணும் அரசியல் நையாண்டி என் அன்பிற்கும் மதிப்பிற்குமுரிய என் தந்தை அவர்களிடம் நான் கேட்டு மிகவும் வியந்த ஒன்றாகும். அதனை இவண் தங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்துக் கொள்ள விழைகிறேன்.

1967ஆம் ஆண்டுச் சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தல் சூடு பிடித்திருந்த நேரத்தில் ஒரு காங்கிரசுக் கட்சி ஆதரவு இதழில் பேரறிஞர் அண்ணா அவர்களின் கேலி ஓவியம்(Cartoon) ஒன்றினை வெளியிட்டிருந்தனர். அக்கேலி ஓவியத்தில் அண்ணா அவர்கள் கழுதையின் மீது ஏறிச் சென்று கோட்டையைக் கைப்பற்றுவதாக வரையப்பட்டிருந்தது.

இதனைப் பற்றி அண்ணாவின் கருத்து என்னவென்று அவரிடம் இதழியலாளர்கள்(Journalists) வினவியபோது, அண்ணா உடனே பின்வருமாறு பதிலளித்தார்:

"நான் இது நாள் வரை கோட்டையைக் கைப்பற்றுவது ஒரு கடினமானச் செயல் என்றே கருதியிருந்தேன். ஆனால், காங்கிரசு நண்பர்கள் அதெல்லாம் ஒன்றுமில்லை கழுதை மேல் ஏறிச் சென்றாலே போதும் எளிதில் கோட்டையைப் பிடித்து விடலாமென எனக்கு இக்கேலி ஓவியத்தின் மு°லம் தெரிவித்துவிட்டார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு என் நன்றி உரித்தாகுக!"

Dr. C. N. Annadurai at Yale University

Let us see an interesting information on, one of the erstwhile chief ministers of the state of Tamil Nadu in India, Dr. C. N. Annadurai(15.09.1909 - 03.02.1969).

Dr. C. N. Annadurai, commonly referred to as Anna by Tamil speaking community, founded the most famous Dravidian party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK), in the year 1949. He served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu from 1967 - 1969. He held M. A.(Hons.) in Economics. He was a multi-faceted personality. He was a politician, erudite, diplomat, playwright, short-story writer, stage artist and so on and so forth.

He was a great orator. I even feel like genuflecting before his eloquence. Let me now narrate the following interesting information on Dr. C. N. Annadurai. Once in Yale University, USA, the following question was posed to the silver-tongued personality by a native speaker of English:

Can you construct a sentence in English by using because three times in it?

தமிழ் மொழியினைத் தாய் மொழியாகக் கொண்டவர்களில் எத்துணைப் பேர் தமிழ் மொழியில் எண்கள் உள்ளன என்பதனை அறிவர்? அப்படியே தமிழில் எண்கள் உள்ளன என்னும் தகவலினை அறிதவர்களில் எத்துணைப் பேர் அவ்வெண்களை அறிவர்?

தமிழகத்தின் அண்டை மாநிலம் ஒன்றில் வாழும் தமிழ்ப் பெண்ணான நான் நாள் தோறும் நான் வாழும் நகரத்தில் ஓடும் மாநகரப் பேருந்துகளைக் காணும் போது அப்பேருந்துகளின் பெயர் மற்றும் எண்களைத் தாங்கி வரும் ஒவ்வொரு பலகையிலும் பேருந்துகளின் எண்கள் அம்மாநிலத்தின் ஆட்சி மொழியிலும் எழுதப்பட்டிருப்பதைக் காண்கிறேன்.

மேலும் எனக்குத் தெரியவந்த மற்றுமொருத் தகவல் யாதெனின் இம்மாநில மொழியினைப் பயிலும் பிள்ளைகள் அனைவருக்கும் தொடக்கக் கல்வி நிலையிலேயே அம்மொழியின் எண்கள் பயிற்றுவிக்கப்படுகின்றன. இங்கு நிலைமை இவ்வாறு இருக்க நல்ல கல்வி அறிவு பெற்றத் தமிழர்கள் கூட தமிழில் எண்கள் உள்ளன என்னும் அடிப்படைத் தகவிலினைக் கூட அறியாமல் உள்ளனர்!!

நான் தொடக்கப் பள்ளியிலிருந்து இளம் அறிவியல் இரண்டாம் ஆண்டு வரை முறையாகத் தமிழ்ப் பயின்றேன். ஆயினும் நான் தமிழ் எண்களை எந்தத் தமிழ் ஆசிரியரிடமோ அல்லது பேராசிரியரிடமோ கற்கவில்லை. நான் என் விடா முயற்சியாலும் கடவுளின் நல்லருளாலும் நூலக நூல்கள் மு°லமே அவற்றை அறிந்துக் கொண்டேன்.

இந்நேரத்தில் என்னை மிகவும் வேதனை அடைய வைத்த ஒருத் தகவலினை நான் தங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்துக் கொள்ள விழைகிறேன். என்னுடன் பணிபுரியும் வேதியியலில் பண்டாரகர் பட்டம் பெற்றத் தமிழர் ஒருவர் வேற்று மொழியினைத் தாய் மொழியாகக் கொண்ட மற்றுமோர் உடன் பணிபுரிபவரிடம் பின் வருமாறு ஒரு முறைக் கூறினார்:

"உங்கள் மொழியில் உங்கள் மொழிக்கென உரிய எண்கள் உள்ளன. ஆனால், மிகவும் பழைமையான, சிறந்த இலக்கிய வளமுள்ள மொழியாகப் போற்றப் படும் எங்கள் தமிழ் மொழியிலோ அவ்வாறு ஏதுமில்லை!".

பின் அத்தமிழரிடம், அவருக்குக் கீழ் பணிபுரியும், நான் எடுத்துக் கூறி அவ்வெண்களை அவருக்கு அறிமுகமும் செய்து செய்தேன்.

தமிழகத்திலேயே நம் மொழியின் இந்த அவல நிலையினை என்னென்று சொல்வது? இந்தியா விடுதலை அடைந்து அறுபது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேலாகிவிட்டது. இதுவரை தமிழகத்தை ஆண்ட ஓர் அரசும் இதைப் பற்றி எவ்வாறு கவனத்தில் கொள்ளாமல் இருந்தது?

தமிழ் வளர்ச்சி மற்றும் பண்பாட்டுத் துறையின் செயல்பாடுகள் தான் என்ன? தமிழ் எண்கள் வெறும் சிலப்பதிகாரம், புறநானூறு போன்ற இலக்கியப் படைப்புகளுக்கு மட்டும் தானா? மேலும், தமிழ் மொழியினைத் தட்டச்சு செய்ய உதவும் இணையத்தளங்கள் பலவற்றிலும் தமிழ் எண்களுக்கென விசைகள் கிடையாது. தமிழ்த் தட்டச்சினை முறையாகப் பயின்ற நான் என்றுமே தமிழ்த் தட்டச்சுப் பொறிகளில் தமிழ் எண்களைத் தட்டச்சு செய்வதற்குரிய விசைகளை கண்டதில்லை!

Kannadasan - An Interesting Piece of Information

Today I wish to share an interesting piece of information with you all on Kannadasan(1927 - 1981). For the sake of non-Tamilians, let me give a small introduction on him. He is a famous Tamil cine lyricist of yesteryears. He has penned several thousand Tamil cine lyrics. I won't be justified, if I refrain from mentioning his multi-faceted personality. Apart from penning poetry, he has also penned several Tamil short stories, dramas, essays and has also acted in and produced some Tamil movies. One ironical thing which everyone should note here is that eventhough he was a drop-out in middle school, his writings were equivalent to that of an erudite. The following piece of information is actually an epitome of the irony. Long time back, I came across it in a Tamil weekly.

Let me start narrating it to you all now:

Once the daughter of the reknowned English poet William Wordsworth (referred to as Nature Poet and he was the one who said that poetry is a spontaneous over flow of powerful feelings), who herself was a poetess paid a visit to Chennai and was staying in a star hotel. Kannadasan, who came to know about her presence in Chennai, wanted to call on her at the hotel. Consequently he went to the hotel but there he was denied permission to meet the distinguished guest by the authorities of the hotel. Kannadasan then kindly requested one of the room boys to just hand over a bit of paper, in which he wrote something in English for her, and get back to him with her response post that.

The room boy obliged to do so and after the poetess went through the contents in the paper, she forced the room boy to take her to Kannadasan. The conversation between the English poetess and the Tamil poet then lasted for hours together. Can any one guess what there was in the paper which forced the English poetess to meet Kannadasan? It is as under:

Dissolution of Gold in Aqua Regia

Here I wish to explain how the so called noble metal gold dissolves in Aqua regia. Aqua regia is a mixture of 3 parts of concentrated HCl and one part of concentrated HNO3. Aqua regia is supposed to be the best and also the only solvent for gold.

The dissolution of the noble metal gold occurs by the formation of a square planar complex between gold and chloride ions. The name of the complex is Hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III). The stoichiometry of the reaction is as under:

3AuCl3 + HNO3 +3HCl -----------> 3H[Au(Cl)4] + 2H2O + NO

Aqua regia also solublises other metals like silver, nickel, cobalt etc.

பின் வரும் சிறுகதையானது பிரபல அமெரிக்க ஆங்கிலச் சிறுகதை எழுத்தாளராகிய ஒ. என்ரி என்றழைக்கப்படும் வில்லியம் சி்ட்னி போர்ட்டர் என்பவரால், "After Twenty Years" என்னும் தலைப்பில் எழுதப்பட்டதாகும். இச்சிறுகதை எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த ஆங்கிலச் சிறுகதையாகும். அதனை இவண் தமிழில் காண்போம்.

ஒரு நாள் ஒரு காவலர் நியு யார்க் நகர வீதிகளில் இரவு பத்து மணி அளவிற்கு ரோந்துப் பணியில் ஈடுப்பட்டிருந்தார். அவர் பூட்டப்பட்ட கடையின் முன் ஒரு மனிதன் நிற்பதைக் கண்டார். அவனிடம் சென்று அவன் எதற்காக கொட்டும் பனியையும் பொருட் படுத்தாமல் அங்கு நின்றுக் கொண்டிருந்தான் என்று வினவினார்.

அதற்கு அம்மனிதன் தன் பெயர் பாப் என்றுக் கூறி புகைக் குழாயினைப் பற்ற வைத்தான். அதில் அவன் முகத்தினைக் காவலரால் காண முடிந்தது. அவன் முகத்தைக் கண்ட அவர் அவன் ஒரு பெரிய பணக்காரனான இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதனை அவன் அணிந்திருந்த உடை மற்றும் கணையாழியின் மு°லம் ஊகித்துக் கொண்டார். பிறகு அவன் அவரிடம் பின்வருமாறு கூறினான்:

"நானும் ஜிம்மி வெல்சும் உற்ற நண்பர்கள். எங்கள் இருவரைப் போன்ற உற்ற நண்பர்களை எங்கும் காண இயலாது. எங்களுக்குள் மனக் கசப்பு என்றும் ஏற்பட்டதே கிடையாது. இருபது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் நான் பதினெட்டு அகவை நிரம்பிய வாலிபனாக இருந்தேன். என் நண்பன் ஜிம்மி வெல்சு இருபது அகவை நிரம்பிய வாலிபனாக இருந்தான். நாங்கள் இருவரும் இருபது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் ஒரு நாளில் இதே இடத்தில் ஒரு ஒப்பந்தம் செய்துக் கொண்டோம். அதன் படி சரியாக இருபது ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு நாம் இருவரும் உயிரோடு இருந்தால், நாம் எங்கு இருந்தாலும் எவ்வளவுத் தொலைவில் இருந்தாலும் அதனைப் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் இதே இடத்தில் இதே நேரத்தில் ஒருவரை யொருவர் சந்திக்க வேண்டும். இன்று அந்நாளாகும். நாங்கள் இருவரும் இதே இடத்தில் இருபது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இவ்விடத்தில் இரவு பத்து மணியளவிற்கு அவ்வாறு ஒப்பந்தம் செயதுக் கொண்டு பிரிந்துச் சென்றோம்".

அவர் பாபிடம், ஜிம்மி வெல்சுடன், பிரிந்துச் சென்ற பிறகு அவன் தொடர்பு ஏதாவது வைத்திருந்தானா என்று வினவினார். அதற்கு அவன் அவர்கள் இருவரும் பிரிந்துச் சென்றவுடன் அவன் பிழைப்புத் தேடி மேற்கு நோக்கிச் சென்றதாகவும் ஆனால் ஜிம்மி வெல்சு மட்டும் நியு யார்க் நகரிலேயே இருந்து விட்டதாகவும் கூறினான். மேலும், பிரிந்துச் சென்ற பின் ஓரிரு ஆண்டுகள் வரை மட்டும் அவர்கள் இருவருக்குமிடையில் தொடர்பு இருந்ததாகவும் கூறினான்.

காவலர் மணி பத்தைக் கடந்து விட்டதாகவும் இனியும் அவன் நண்பன் ஜிம்மி வெல்சு அங்கு வருவான் என்ற நம்பிக்கை அவனிற்கு உள்ளதா என்று வினவினார். அதற்கு பாப், "என் நண்பன் ஜிம்மி உயிருடன் இருந்தால் தவறாமல் என்னைக் காண வருவான்" என்றான். பிறகு அடுத்த அரை மணி நேரம் வரை தன் ஜிம்மிக்காக காத்திருக்கப் போவதாகவும் கூறினான். பிறகு காவலர் அவனிடமிருந்து விடைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டார்.

பாப் தன் உயிர்த் தோழன் ஜிம்மிக்காக ஆவலுடன் ஒவ்வொரு நிமிடமாகக் காத்திருந்தான். சற்று நேரத்தில் ஒரு உயரமான மனிதன் தலையில் தொப்பியுடனும் உடம்பில் குளிர்கால உடையுடனும் எதிரில் வந்துக் கொண்டிருந்நதான். அவன் அவ்வாறு வந்துக் கொண்டிருக்கையில் பாப்பை நோக்கி, "அது நீ தானா பாப்?" என்று வினவினான். பாபும் உடனே, "யார் ஜிம்மியா?" என்று வினவினான். பிறகு இருவரும் உள்ளக் களிப்பில் ஒருவர் கையை ஒருவர் கோர்த்துக் கொண்டு நடக்கத் தொடங்கினர். அந்த இருபது ஆண்டு இடைவெளியில் ஜிம்மி சற்று உயரமாகி விட்டதாக பாப் கூறினான். மகிழ்ச்சிக் களிப்பில் ஒருவரைப் பற்றி ஒருவர் உசாவிக் கொண்டு சிறிது தொலைவு நடந்து வந்நனர்.

ஒரு கடையின் அருகில் வந்தவுடன் அங்கிருந்த வெளிச்சத்தில் ஜிம்மியின் முகத்தைக் கண்டு பாப் திடுக்கிட்டான். தன்னுடன் இருப்பவன் தன்னுடைய உற்ற நண்பன் ஜிம்மி இல்லை என்பதனை அவன் உணர்ந்தான். பிறகு அவனின் கையை விலக்கி விட்டு, "இருபது ஆண்டு கால இடைவெளியில் ஒரு மனிதன் சற்று உயரமாவதற்கு வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறதென்றும் ஆனால் ஒரு மனிதனுடைய மு°க்கின் புறத் தோற்றம் முழுமையாக மாறும் அளவிற்கு அஃதொன்றும் பெரிய இடைவெளி இல்லை" என்றும் கூறினான்.

உடனே பாபுடனிருந்த அந்த மனிதன் பத்து நிமிடங்களுக்கு முன் பாப்பை அவன் சிறைப் பிடித்து விட்டதாகக் கூறினான். அதைக் கேட்டுத் திடுக்கிட்ட பாபிடம் அவன் ஒருத் தாளினைக் கொடுத்தான். அத்தாளில் பின் வருமாறு எழுதியிருந்தது:

"பாப் குறித்த நேரத்தில் நான் அங்கு வந்திருந்தேன். நீ உன் புகைக் குழாயினைப் பற்ற வைத்த போது உன் முகத்தினை என்னால் நன்கு காண முடிந்தது. மேலும், அம்முகமே நியு யார்க் நகர காவலர்களால் பெரிதும் தேடப்படும் முகம் என்பதனையும் உணர்ந்தேன். ஆனால், என்னால் அதைச் செய்ய இயலவில்லை அதனால் தான் என்னுடன் பணிபுரிபவரை அதனைச் செய்யுமாறு வேண்டிக் கொண்டேன் - ஜிம்மி வெல்சு"

இதனைப் படித்து முடித்தவுடன் பாபின் கை நடுங்கியது.

Today I received a mail from one of my senior colleagues which made me dumbfounded. The content of the mail is as under:

Section 49-O of the Indian Constitution:

According to the aforesaid section of the Indian constituion, during elections, a citizen of India can go to the respective polling booth and report to the presiding officer that he/she doesn't feel like excersing his/her franchise to any of the candidates in the fray and can get his/her finger marked with the indelible ink.

The importance of this 49-O section of Indian constitution is that in a particular ward, if the number of "Vote to Nobody"(by making use of section 49-O) exceeds the number of votes secured by the winner then that ward would go for re-polling. Also, there is a feasibility of denying candidature to all the candidates who were in the foray during re-polling, since the people had already expressed their dislike by making use of section 49-O.

My Opinion:

I can swear that even many of the most responsible citizens of India would not be aware of this section of the Indian Constitution. I have never come across this section anywhere before. Thus far I have heard of only "Article 356" and "Indian Penal Code 320". Thus far none of the directors/actors of Kollywood has made the public aware of this.

Last but not the least, I wish to make a humble request to all my fellow Indians. If you don't feel like electing any candidate who are in the fray of your respective constituency, instead of simply enjoying the leave offered on the day of polling, please do take the small pain of going to the polling booth and make use of the section 49-O of our constitution. Thereby, you end up posing a threat to the corrupt politicians.

As a student of Chemistry, I wish to share some interesting facts on the elements in the periodic table. Also, here I wish to cover only uncommon elements. By uncommon elements, I mean elements which people, who don't possess Chemistry back ground, may not be knowing.

Lithium(Li):
It is the smallest metal in the periodic table. Some of its ores are Lepidolite, Spodumene etc. Lithium Carbonate is used as an anti-tussive agent.

Germanium(Ge):
The atomic number of Germanium is 32. It is also known as Eka-Silicon. It is a metalloid and it is widely used as a semi-conductor. It was discovered by Winkler and it is named after his mother country, which is Germany.

Tungsten(W):
The atomic number of tungsten is 74. The element owes it's symbol to it's another name Wolfram, which in Swedish language means "Heavy Stone". Tungsten finds its applications in electrical filament lamps.

Chlorine(Cl):
The atomic number is 17. It is an important member of halogen family. In Greek, "Chlor" means "Green" and chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas. It is an effective disinfectant.

Polonium(Po):
The atomic number is 84. It is radioactive. It is named after the mother country of its discoverer Marie Curie. As we all know, the mother country of the first woman Nobel Laurete, Marie Curie, is Poland. Apart from Polonium, she is also the discoverer of another radioactive element Radium(Ra). The atomic number of radium is 88. Also, one of the trans-uranic elements is named after the spouse of Marie Curie, which is, Curium(Cm) of atomic number 96.

Gallium(Ga):
The atomic number is 31. Many people know that mercury is a liquid metal but mercury is not the sole liquid metal in the periodic table. Even Gallium is a liquid metal. There are totally five liquid elements in the periodic table. Of those five, Bromine(Br) is the only liquid non-metal.

Technitium(Tc):
The atomic number is 43. One thing peculiar to technitium is that it is the only radioactive element amongst d-block elements.

Tin(Sn):
The atomic number is 50. It owes its symbol to its Latin name "Stannum". There are two allotropic forms of tin, namely, white tin and grey tin. When one of the allotropic forms transforms into another, a crackling sound would be heard, which is referred to as "Tin Cry".

Cadmium(Cd):
The atomic number is 48. It is a heavy metal poison. The disease caused by cadmium poisoning is known as "Itai itai".

Indium(In):
The atomic number is 49. Like the people of Germany and Poland, we Indians cannot take pride that this element has been named after our India, since it owes its name only to the indigo coloured lines observed in its atomic spectrum.

Question Types in English

Today let me discuss something on "Types of Questions" in English. There are two different question types in English. They are: "Wh Questions" and "Yes (or) No Questions".

As said in one of my previous posts, while posing questions in English, the verb should precede the subject(noun/pronoun). One shouldn't commit any mistake in it, even unwittingly, if one wants one's English to be close to perfection.

To make one's life easier, "Yes (or) No Questions" begin only with verbs. For example:

* Do you like to wear saree? (The answer would either be Yes or No)

* Are you the only child for your parents? (The answer would either be Yes or No)

* Is she a doctor? (The answer would either be Yes or No)

* Does she know Tamil? (The answer would either be Yes or No)

So, non-native speakers of English are prone to commit mistakes only with "Wh Questions". Also, such questions begin with question words like How? What? Which? Where? When? Why? How many? How much? For What? and so on and so forth.

The general structure of "Wh Questions" is,

Question word + verb + subject?

Let us see some examples:

* What is the time now? (Here, verb - is; subject/noun - time)

* How many mangoes are in the basket? (Here, verb - are; subject/noun - basket)

* How many children does she have? (Here, verb - does have; subject/pronoun - she)

* How much do you charge your customers for dozen biscuits? (Here, verb - do; subject/pronoun - you)

Now let us see a special case. Here, a question would contain both "Yes or No Part" and "Wh Part" and the "Yes or No Part" would be normally followed by the "Wh Part".

Let us see some examples:

* Do you know where my bag is?

(Here, "Do you know" is the "Yes or No part" and "Where my bag is" is the "Wh Part". In this case, the "Yes or No Part" alone is considered as the question part and the "Wh Part" is considered as the statement part. So, only in the "Yes or No Part" the verb should precede the subject and not in the "Wh Part". In the "Wh Part", the verb should succeed(come after) the noun. Hence,

* Do you know where my bag is? (Correct)
* Do you know where is my bag? (Wrong)

* Does she know when the meeting commences? (Correct)
* Does she know when commences the meeting? (Wrong)

* Do you know how cement is manufactured in factories? (Correct)
* Do you know how is cement manufactured in factories? (Wrong)

Goa - A travelogue

On 1st and 2nd of October, I happened to tour the Indian state of Goa along with my Mom, paternal aunt and a friend of mine. On 30.09.2007, at 8:45 PM we boarded a bus at Mangalore of Karnataka and on 01.10.2007 we landed at Panaji, the capital city of Goa, at 9:00 AM. Soon after alighting from the bus, we boarded a taxi and checked in at Hotel Nova Goa, which is situated at Dr. Atmaram Borkar Road, Panaji. Panjim is the old name of the city of Panaji.

After finishing off our breakfast, around 10:30 AM we hired a car and went to the world famous Basilica of Bom Jesus. There we happened to see about 500 year old undecomposed dead body of St. Francis Xavier. The dead body is kept in a covered coffin at a particular altitude. The sides of the coffin are made of glass so as to enable the tourists to view the dead body. Immediately to the right of Basilica of Bom Jesus, the largest Roman Catholic Church in Asia, by name, Immaculate Church is situated. Every year in November - December for about 45 days, the coffin containing the dead body of St. Francis Xavier would be kept open at Immaculate Church. The dead body is devoid of one of the hands. It is at one of the museums in Rome.

The next tourist spot that we visited was a Shiva temple. The name of the presiding Diety is Mangueshi Prasanna. It is said that it has been built by the ancestors of the famous play back singer Latha Mangeshkar. After our worship at Mangueshi Prasanna temple, we proceeded to Shantha Durga Temple. From Shantha Durga temple, we proceeded to a spice plantation , which is being maintained by the Government of Goa. The entry fee is Rs. 300/- per head which is inclusive of lunch. The spice garden is situated in a sprawling area of 130 acres. But tourists would be travelling only about 2 acres with the help of Botanists as guides. The guides apprise the tourists a lot about spices and spice plantations. (Infact, I have to draft the learnings that I had there in a separate blog. I would do that at the earliest). We were served a healthy drink and a delicious lunch in that spice plantation.

Our next tourist spot was Aguada Fort. As we all know that the state of Goa was ruled by Portugese for about 400 years, the two storeyed fort owes its construction to Portugese. It was built by them to water the ships. The fort also houses a jail for drug addicts. Entry into the jail is prohibited for tourists. Goa has innumerable beaches. Since we hail from the city of Chennai, which is also a littoral city, we wanted to drop in at only one of the beaches. Consequently we decided to drop in at Calangute Beach. Just infront of the beach, one would find the statue of Dayanand Bandodkar, the first chief minister of Goa and Diu and Daman. We spent about 15 minutes there and then proceeded to witness two Goan folk dances (one a welcome dance and the another is normally performed during harvest) and a Portugese dance by travelling in a ship. With that we terminated our tour for that day and got back to the lodge, post dinner.

The next day morning around 10:30 we checked out of the lodge and hired the same car. To cherish our trip to Goa, we got into a textile shop and purchased some dresses. Post our purchase, we proceeded to see St. Augustine's Church. The church is in a dilapidated state. The walls of the church serve as asylums for several colonies of algae. We then stepped into a Christian Museum. There are so many exhibits of Christianity and celebrated Christians. We happened to see an old, big Portugese version of Holy Bible. From there, we proceeded to Catalan Church. The architecture of the church is laudable. One of the fascinating things in the church is that the altar(the place from where the Christian priests deliver sermon) has been constructed around a well!!

We then proceeded to Immaculate Chruch. As said before, it is the largest Roman Catholic Church in Asia. The church houses a wooden Holy Cross, which is referred to as Medical Cross (or) Cross of Miracles. It bears such an epithet because it keeps growing! We offered prayers there. We terminated our tour there. We then stepped into a hotel for lunch and then proceeded to Dabolim Air Port at Vasco to board our flight.

The state of Goa is being inhabited by Konkani speaking Hindus and Christians. It is the only Indian state where bigamy or polygamy of a Hindu is legal, whereas that of a Muslim is illegal!!!

Since the script of Konkani language is not that popular, Marati is being patronised throughout the state. English is also being patronised throughout the state of Goa. Marmagoa or Margoa is an important port. Various cuisines are available at Goa. The best season to tour Goa is October - December. Also, the cost of hotels and lodges shoot up phenomenally that time.

Panaji is well-connected by road to places like Karwar, Mangalore, Mumbai etc. The railway station and the airport are situated at Vasco. Goa is well-connected by rail to Chennai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Bangalore etc. It is well-connected by air to several destinations. Margoa is also one of the important railway stations.

To sum up, "Life is like an ice-cream; Enjoy well before it melts"

Thiruvannamalai Lord Annamalayaar Temple - My Most Favourite Temple

In this post, I would like to give a brief account on my most favourite temple, which is, Lord Annamalayaar (or) Lord Arunachaleswarar temple at Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, India. One particular thing on which I would like to write in detail is the circumambulation which is being done by innumberable devotees on every full moon night. I really don't understand why I have a special place in my heart for this particular temple. I believe that only The Omnipotent, Lord Annamalayaar can offer an explanation.

Hope that this temple doesn't need any explanation for people who hail from my home state (Tamil Nadu) but I would like give a brief account of this temple and the presiding deity for people hailing from other parts of India and the world.

The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Siva. Here, He is referred by the name Annamalayaar (in Tamil) (or) Arunachalaeswarar (in Sanskrit). His Consort is Goddess Unnamulai. The temple is situated at the district of Thiruvannamalai in the state of Tamil Nadu. The temple is about 185 km from Chennai. It is well-connected to all parts of Tamil Nadu and many parts of neighbouring states like Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh by road. The temple has been constructed in a sprawling area of 27 acres. The 11-storeyed main temple tower, referred to as "Rajagopuram" in Tamil, is the second tallest temple tower in Asia. It is believed that, in this temple, Lord Siva represents one of the five elements of the universe, namely, The Fire. The other four being, land, sky, air and water.

Before proceeding further, I would like to quote one of the Tamil adages on this temple, which translates into English as:

"One attains oneness with God, if one is born at Thiruvaroor (in Tamil Nadu, which also enshrines a famous Siva temple); One attains oneness with God, if one joins the majority at Khasi; One attains oneness with God, the moment one thinks of Thiruvannamalai!!!"

Just infront of the temple there is a mountain. It is believed that Lord Siva has got transmogrified into this mountain. The summit of the mountain is approximately 2700 feet in altitude. The circumference of the mountain is approximately 14.5 km. On every full moon day, after the onset of full moon, innumerable devotees (approximately 6 lakhs), circumambulate the mountain by walk. This circumambulation is believed to consecrate the performer. It is also believed to do miracles in one's life. Thus far, with the Divine Mercy of Lord Annamalayaar, I have done that circumambulation nine times in my life. Ofcourse! Post every circumambulation, I was blessed with some discernible good fortune in my life.

On an average, it takes three and half hours to complete this circumambulation. I personally recommend that whoever does this circumambulation should refrain from uttering anything other than phrases/devotional hymns in praise of Lord Siva. I fervently believe that during the circumambulation, the body, the soul and the language of a person should be in phase with one another and should not concentrate on anyone/anything other than The Almighty.

On every full moon day, the Government of Tamil Nadu operates special buses from almost all parts of Tamil Nadu and also from some parts of neighbouring states to Thiruvannamalai. The fact is that on every full moon day, from the city of Chennai alone, approximately 450 special buses and about 30 special trains are being operated to Thiruvannamalai. On every full moon day, at Thiruvannamalai, even in the wee hours also one would be in a position to procure everything that one needs, which would otherwise be impossible.

Also, the path of circumbulation is well-equipped with dormitory halls for taking rest, clean toilets, street lights, sign boards, hotels, cafes etc for the convenience of devotees. The cleanliness of the path is also being maintained to a fairly good extent. Apart from that, in the path of circumambulation, many local inhabitants offer food (or) fruit juices (whichever they can afford to) to the devotees for free of cost.

Since I am not omniscient, I don't have much to write about the aforesaid sacred place.

How does starch act as an indictor?

All Chemistry lovers would know that starch (a bio-polymer) serves as an indicator in iodometric and iodimetric titrations, which are epitomes of redox titrations.

As a student of Chemistry, I wish to explain the intricate mechanism by which the bio-polymer serves as an indicator in the aforesaid redox titrations.

The bio-polymer starch comprises of 20% water soluble amylose and 80% water insoluble amylopectin. The amylose component of starch possesses helical structure by virtue of which it serves as an indicator in iodometric and iodimetric titrations.

In both the titrations, the system will possess a mixture of molecular iodine(I2) and iodide ions(I-). Molecular iodine combines with iodide ions in a reversible manner, thereby giving rise to a complex called tri-iodide ions(I3-). The equilibrium of the reaction of formation of tri-iodide(I3-) ions is always backwards. So, I3- ions are actually considered as molecular iodine(I2) in a solution of iodide ions(I-).

It is hypothesised that when an aqueous solution of starch is added into a system comprising a mixture of I2 and I- ions, the I3- ions(that will be present all the time) and I2 will enter into the cage formed by the helical structure of starch, where they combine together to form I5- ions. The I5- ions complex with starch through weak Van-der-Waals force. This complex of I5- ions and starch is blue in colour. Thus as soon as starch is added into the system, violet colour is observed. With subsequent addition of the titrant, usually sodium thiosulphate(Na2S2O3), the violet colour gradually disappers and the end-point is complete disappearnce of the violet colour.

A necessary precaution that has to be taken while making use of starch as an indicator is that, it should be added only after the colour of the solution in the conical flask turns straw yellow in colour. If starch is added in prior, then excess of iodine would get into the helical structure of starch and get coagulated. Thus, one would end up getting non-reproducible end-points.

Silappadhikaaram - Narration in English

Here I would like to give a gist of the famous Tamil epic "Silappadhikaram", my most favourite epic. This is essentially for non-Tamil speakers to gain a flavour of the marvellous Tamil literary work.

The title of the work, "Silappadhikaaram", literally translates into English as, "Chapter of the Anklet". It was penned by a Prince(of Chera dynasty, the dynasty that ruled the present day's Kerala for centuries together) turned Jain Saint, by name, Elangovadigal, around 2nd century AD. Elangovadigal abdicated worldly life to belie the predication of an astrologer, who in his father's court predicted that despite being the second son of the ruler, Neduncheralathan, he would only succeed his father and not his elder brother Cheran Senguttuvan, who was believed by all as the heir to the throne.

The following is something very peculiar to Silappadhikaaram:

The epic conveys three universal truths, the story of the epic revolves around three principal characters, it extols three dynasties (The Chera, Choza and Pandya dynasties, the three great dynasties that ruled the then Tamil Nadu), it talks about three cities (Poomphuar, Maduari and Vanji (Vanji is a part of present day's Kerala)) and about three mountains, the epic has three main chapters (known as Kaandangal in Tamil), the epic has been penned in all three facets of Tamil language, namely, prose, poetry and drama. One more beauty of the epic is that eventhough it has been penned by a staunch follower of Jainism, no other deity/religous sentiment has been criticised or abased in it.

The three universal truths that are being conveyed by the epic are:

a) If a ruler doesn't abide by righteousness, then the very act would prove to be a God of Death (known by the name Yaman/Yama in Hindu mythology) for him

b) A woman with high degree of chastity would be worshipped even by the noble

c) Every human being has to face the music for every sin, even if it had been comitted in the ex-birth

In most of the Tamil epics/literary works of those days, the principal character would be a Divine figure and not a layman. On the contrary, in Silappadhikaaram, all three principal characters are laymen. Hence, in Tamil, the epic is referred by the epithet, "Kudimakkal Kaappiyam", which means, "Epic of the masses".

With this much of introduction on the epic and its author, let me start narrating the story of the epic now:

In the city of Poompuhar, which was then ruled by the Choza dynasty, where river Cauvery flows into Bay of Bengal, there lived two reknowned businessmen by name Masaathuvaan and Maanaicken. Masaathuvaan had a son by name Kovalan, the hero of the epic and Maanaicken had a daughter by name Kannagi, the heroin of the epic. When Kovalan attained the age of sixteen, he got married to Kannagi, who was twelve then. Their marriage ceremony was performed to the amazement of the entire town of Poompuhar.

Kovalan and Kannagi lived happily for a while. One fine day, they both went to witness the performance of danseuse Madhavi, who hailed from a Devadasi family (referred to as Kanikaiyar Kulam in Tamil), the third principal character of the epic. Kovalan, apparently seduced by her performance and beauty, deserted innocent Kannagi and remained all the time at Madhavi's quarters and in due course united with her in wedlock. Through Kovalan, Madhavi bore a female child, by name, Manimekalai, christened after the family deity of Kovalan.

Owing to his affairs with Madhavi, Kovalan was least bothered about grief- stricken Kannagi. Seduced Kovalan gradually lost interest in his business also. Chitrapathi, mother of Madhavi, in the name of Kovalan, cunningly deprived Kannagi of all her wealth and heaped the same at her daughter Madhavi's premises.

One fine day, Kovalan went to attend a trade fare along with Madhavi. They had a nice time there and in an exuberant mood Kovalan requested Madhavi to sing a song. Madhavi obliged her spouse's request and sang a song by playing the musical instrument veena. Kovalan started reading between the lines of Madhavi's lyrics and developed a suspicion on her that she being a Kanigai(Devadasi) possessed interest on the Choza King, even after having had married him.

Furious Kovalan then parted with Madhavi and left for Kannagi's place. Grief-stricken Kannagi, became ebullient on seeing Kovalan. Kovalan begged the pardon of Kannagi. But Kannagi by virtue of her high degree of chastity, didn't even consider her spouse's affairs with Madhavi either as an insult or as a disloyal act of Kovalan towards her. With all grace, he was accepted by Kannagi.

Kovalan and Kannagi found themselves deprived of all material wealth except a pair of anklets(called Silambu in Tamil) that were being worn by Kannagi. Since Kovalan's affairs with Madhavi had earned him disgrace amongst the people of Poompuhar, they thought that it would be embarassing for them to continue living there. So, they came up with the decisive decision of earning a living and settling down peacefully in the city of Madurai, the capital of Pandya dynasty. That night itself, they started their voyage to Madurai by walk.

During their voyage, they encountered a female Jain Saint by name Kaundhiadigal. The chastity of Kannagi made the unadulterated Jain Saint to utter the following in praise of Kannagi:

"I, who had not worshipped anyone other than Lord Arugan(The principal deity of Tamil speaking Jains), instantaneously after looking at Kannagi, started worshipping her as a Goddess"

She accompained Kovalan and Kannagi till Madurai, where her hermit was. Also, she left them under the protection of Ayai, a Yadhava woman. Ayai took utmost care of her guests. Kovalan and Kannagi were moved by the hospitality of poor Ayai.

To earn a living in the city of Madurai, Kovalan and Kannagi came up with the idea of pledging one of the anklets of Kannagi. Kannagi happily handed over one of her anklets to Kovalan, who left her at Ayai's premises and went to pledge it at the premises of a gold smith. At that time, one of the anklets of Koperundevi, the Queen of Madurai, which was given to the gold smith for repair, was stolen. When Kovalan went to pledge one of the anklets of Kannagi, he was mistaken for the culprit by the people over there. They then informed the King, Pandiyan Neduncheziyan. The King, who was supposed to make thorough enquiries before rendering his final verdict, instead, ordered his men to behead Kovalan. Consequently, innocent Kovalan was beheaded!

Kannagi, after hearing the news, became furious and bravely stepped into the court of the king and verbally attacked him with rage. She proved to everyone that her husband was innocent by breaking open the sole anklet that she had with her, which comprised of beads of rubies. She demanded the king to break open both the anklets of his queen. He accepted her demand and broke open one of the anklets of the queen which comprised of beads of pearls and when he broke open the another anklet of his queen, to his horror and to everybody's horror in the court, beads of rubies were emerging out of it!!

The King, who was very much reputed for rightousness until then, realised his grave blunder and died of shock and grief. Following the king, the queen also joined the majority. Kannagi, who remained inconsolable even then, by virtue of her high degree of chastity tore off one of her breasts and threw it and set ablaze the entire city of Madurai, where injustice was rendered to her innocent consort.

With untold sorrow and agony, she reached the city of Vanji, where her deceased husband descended from a vehicle from the heaven and took her along with him. Both Kovalan and Kannagi then attained oneness with God.

In this epic,

* The unadulterated female Jain Saint Kaundhiadigal worshipping Kannagi as a Goddess conveys the second aforesaid universal truth that a woman with high degree of chastity would be worshipped even by the noble

* The king rendering his final verdict without even investigating the case conveys the first aforesaid universal truth that if a ruler doesn't abide by righteousness then the very act would prove to be a God of Death for him

* It is said in the epic, that the hero Kovalan in his ex-birth had rendered injustice to a gold smith and as a consequence of it he was rendered injustice in the next birth through a gold smith. This conveys the third aforesaid universal truth.

A temple has been raised for Kannagi in Srilanka by Kayavaghu, the then ruler of Lanka. There is a temple enshrining Kannagi in present day's Kerala. The art gallery established at Poompuhar by the Government of Tamil Nadu narrates the entire story of Silappadhikaaram through sculptures.

This laudable Tamil literary work is being taught at all levels in schools and in colleges for students, who opt to study Tamil as one of the languages. Thus, Saint Illangovadigal by virtue of his work has earned a peerless place in the history of Tamil literature.

Udupi - Lord Krishna Temple

The town of Udupi, is the head quarters of one of the 27 districts of the state of Karnataka in south India. The name of the district is the same as that of the town itself. Earlier it was a part of South Canara district of Karnataka. The town of Udipi is mainly inhabited by Tulu speaking people. The cuisine of Udupi is quite famous throughout the state of Karnataka as well as in other parts of India.

More than the cuisine, the first thing that would strike many people's mind soon after hearing/encountering the name of the town is the temple enshrining Lord Krishna, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the principal deity of the Vaishnavaites.

Let me now narrate one of the stories associated with the temple. There lived a staunch devotee of the Lord by name Kanakadas, who was also well-versed in playing the musical instrument called "Thambura", who hailed from a lower caste family. During the days of Kanakadas, caste discrimation was at its ne plus ultrum. As a consequence of which, he was forbidden from stepping into the temple by the people of the upper caste. Such an inhuman act made him to go and stand in front of the rear side wall of the temple everyday and made him to worship the Lord from there by playing thambura and singing devotional hymns in praise of the Lord.

This act of Kankadas was incessantly continuing until the day on which the following miracle happened:

On that day, amidst several hundred devotees, who were thronging in the temple to worship the Lord, four bricks from the rear side wall got dislodged completely and fell off and the entire statue of the Lord turned exactly 180 degree facing Kanakadas!!!

Even today we can find the doors opening into the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Krishna remaining shut. And whoever wishes to worship the supreme Lord has to worship Him by viewing Him through the space created by the dislodged bricks.

As a mediocre human bieng, I don't know whether the aforesaid is actually a true incident or a tall story. But unmindful of the authenticity of it, what I would like to say is, it actually corroborates the saying,

"God is one who neither likes nor loathes anyone"

The fourth couplet of the Tamil literary work "Thirukkural" also says,

"Those who bow down to His feet, who neither likes nor loathes anyone,
would never ever have anything called agony"

The town of Udupi is about 60 km from the town of Mangalore, which is the head quarters of the district of South Canara of Karnataka. People who wish to visit Udupi prefer to stay at Mangalore, where good hotels of moderate and affordable cost are available. Mangalore is well-connected by road, rail and air with Chennai, Mumbai, Goa etc. It is well-connected by road and rail with Coimbatore and other parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Plenty of buses ply in a day from Banglore to both Mangalore and Udupi.

Thus far I have visited the temple twice along with my parents. I wish that the Lord showers His Mercy on one and all in the world.

Why is lithium aluminium hydride a better reducing agent than sodium borohydride?

When I started learning organic chemistry in college I used to think quite often, as to what makes lithium aluminium hydride (Li[AlH4]) a better redcuing agent than sodium borohydride (Na[BH4]). As a student of Chemistry, I feel that it should be because of the following reasons:

Both lithium aluminium hydride and sodium borohydride are hydride complexes, in which, the former contains aluminium as the central metal ion and the latter contains boron as the central ion. They both serve as reducing agents by donating the hydride ions. Since the hydride ions (that are of interest to us now) are present in the coordination sphere, let us solely consider the constituents in the coordination sphere.

In sodium borohydride the 1s orbital of the hydride ions has to overlap with the 2p orbitals of boron whereas in the case of lithium aluminium hydride the 1s orbital of the hydride ions has to overlap with the 3p orbitals of aluminium. Overlap of an 1s orbital with 3p orbitals is obviously less favourable than the overlap of an 1s orbital with 2p orbitals. Consequently, the Al-H bonds are cleaved easily as compared to the B-H bonds. This easy cleavage of Al-H bonds actually facilitates the reducing power of the reagent.

One more thing is, both boron and aluminium belong to the same group in the periodic table, which is group-13A. Boron, the predecessor of aluminium in the group, is more electronegative. Thus boron, being more electronegative than aluminium, will have a tendency to retain more negative charge than does aluminium, which in this case is acquired from hydride ions. Thus, the difference in the electronegativities of the central atoms of the two complexes can also serve as one of the factors for the difference in reducing power between the two.

செய்தியினைக் கேட்டுப் பெரிதும் ஆத்திரமடைந்த ஊர் மக்கள் ஜோஸபெவிற்கு இறப்பு ஒறுப்பு (மரண தண்டனை) வழங்கினர். ஜோஸபெவிற்கான ஒறுப்பினை நிறைவேற்றுவதற்காக ஒரு நாள் அவளை ஊர்வலமாக அழைத்துச் சென்றனர். அந்த ஊர்வலத்தின் இரைச்சலை, சிறைக்குள்ளிருந்து கேட்ட போதுதான் ஜெரோனிமோ தன்னைத் தூக்கிலிட்டுக் கொள்வதற்கு முயல்கிறான். அவன் தூக்குக் கயிற்றினைத் தன் கழுத்தில் போட முயலும் தருவாயில் பெரும் நிலநடுக்கம் ஊரையே குலுக்குகிறது. அந்த நிலநடுக்கமே அவனைச் சிறையிலிருந்து விடுவிக்கவும் செய்கிறது.

Andaman - A Travelogue

Early this year, that is, from 7th - 11th of February, I happened to tour Andaman along with my mother and paternal aunt. Andaman,being the birth place cum place of up-bringing of my paternal grandma,was instilling some interest in our hearts to tour the same for decades together until then.

On 7th of February, we boarded the Jet Airways flight at 9:55 AM at Kamaraj Domestic Terminus, Chennai. At 11:55 AM we landed at the Vir Savarkar Airpot, Port Blair. The airport is named after the Maharashtrian freedom fighter, Vir Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. He was ordered to remain behind the bars for fifty years in the cellular jail at Andaman from 1910 - 1960, by the then British Government in India.

Some of our relatives are thriving general merchants there at Andaman. So, soon after landing at the airport, we were picked up by the car driver sent by our relatives and he took us to a place called Aberdeen Bazaar at Port Blair, where our relatives are residing. Just opposite to their house, there is a lodge called "Dhanalakshmi Lodge", where we checked in.

Soon after checking in there, we went to see the saw mill, situated at a place called Chattam, which was established by the then British Government. In the Tamil film, "Andaman Kaadhali", the hero Sivaji Ganesan, plays the role of the same saw mill employee for a while. The saw mill is situated in a sprawling area. We had the opportunity to see how logs of wood are being turned into woods of desired shape and size. From the saw mill, we proceeded to a zoo at Hudoo and then to an aquarium and then to Samudrika museum, which has exhibits of marine life in Andaman. Then we proceeded to Anthropological museum, where we came to know about the inhabitants of Andaman and Nicobar islands.

The Andaman and Nicobar islands together comprise about 356 islands in Bay of Bengal. Together they comprise one of the union territories of India. Of these 356 islands, human beings inhabit only about 10 islands. There are five major islands in Andaman, namely, North Andaman, South Andaman, Middle Andaman, Great Andaman and so on. The capital city Port Blair is situated in south Andaman. It is named after the Britisher, Archibald Blair. The population of Andaman, based on their linguistic identity can be segregated as under:

Bengalis - 23%
Tamils - 19%
Telugu - 12%
Malayalis- 09%
Ranchi - 05%
Tribes - Rest of the population

The Nicobar islands are being inhabited by the Nicobarese. Ethnically they identify themselves with Malay speaking people. Nicobar also comprises of some major islands like Great Nicobar, Car Nicobar etc. The "Indira Point" situated at Car Nicobar forms the southernmost tip of India. From Indira Point, the border of one of the Indonesian islands is only 30 km away. Tourists are not allowed to tour Nicobar islands for some reasons that are not clearly intelligible to me. To go to Nicobar islands, a special permission has to be secured from the Union Government of India. Entry into Nicobar islands is restriced only to army men, naval officers and people who hold high ranks in the Government.

From the anthropological museum, we proceeded to witness the world famous cellular jail. A part of the jail had been lost in one of the natural calamities. The brutal treatment underwent by the freedom fighters of India in that cellular jail has earned en epithet, "Black Water" for the entire islands of Andaman. Every evening a sound and light show is being conducted in the jail, which narrates the untold harships underwent by the freedom fighters to the tourists. A British man, David Barry, has earned a unique place in the history of the cellular jail for having had made the jail a hell for the patriotic prisoners to drive away from their hearts the thirst for freedom, self rule and self respect.

The last tourist spot that we visited that day was a temple enshrining Lord Muruga. The name of the presiding deity is "Vetrimalai Murugan". It is supposed to be one of the biggest Hindu temples there. It is situated at Siddhapur in Port Blair.

The next day morning we pushed off to see three major islands, namely, Ross island, Viper island and North Bay. For the second time in my life, I had an opportunity to travel in the open sea in a ship. My first journey in open sea was in the year 1995 from the sea shore to Vivekananda memorial rock and back at Kaniyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Coming to the beauty and importance of Ross islands:

The Ross islands served as the capital of Andaman and Nicobar islands until 1942, when it was shattered by an earth quake. What is remaining today is only one-fifth of the original Ross islands. Even today one will get to see the Commissioner office, a distillation plant and a church (both in dilapidated state) and other exhibits like the designs of the then British ships, weighing balances etc. I, being a native of Chennai, am very much used to seeing the waters of seas in blue. But in Andaman islands throughout one will get see the sea in green. The Viper island houses a jail in a dilapidated state. The North Bay owes its charm to its rich coral reefs. The total number of families that inhabit the North Bay is only twenty. It has a primary school which has twenty students and a teacher, who comes everyday from Port Blair.

On our third day in Andaman, we toured a farm of spices and condiments that is being run by the Government and Jolly-Buoy island. The Jolly-Buoy island is situated at a distance of 30 km from Port Blair. It also owes all its charm to the rich coral reefs and oysters etc. For the first time in my life, I happened to see star fish of attractive hues, until then I have seen star fish only as a biological specimen in school. The tourists are being taken in glass boats to enjoy viewing the coral reefs and oysters. The tourists are strictly prohibited from disturbing the coral reefs, since they are a source of natural wealth.

On our penultimate day in Andaman, we witnessed Baratang caves in middle Andaman. The caves are actually being formed by water insoluble calcium carbonate. It is really worth seeing. There are about 10 - 12 caves of that sort. We also had the opportunity to witness mud volcano, which is nothing but a lava like thing emanating from heaps of sand of about 30 - 60 cm in height.

Inorder to help us cherish our Andaman trip we bought some items made of shell in a shop that is being run by the Government itself.

The next day we boarded an Indian Airlines flight at Port Blair at 9:00 AM and reached our home town at 11:00 AM. When we were touring Andaman, the following airlines were operating a direct flight from Chennai and Kolkata to Andaman on daily basis:

The best season for touring Andaman is January - February. The temperature that prevails there is normally hotter than Chennai. The cost of living is actually very less there. For tourists from the main land of India, the air travel will be the most expensive as compared to the rest. Ferrys are also being operated from Chennai and Visakhapatnam to Port Blair. The islanders are given concessions in ferrys. The arts and science college at Andaman is affiliated to the University of Pondicherry. The phrase, "One of......................" always takes up a plular noun and a singular verb. For example:

* One of the friends of my sister is an employee of Microsoft

* One of my cousins always enjoys playing cricket

* One of my pens has a platinum coating on it

By making use of the phrase, "One of...........", we are actually choosing one particular person/thing from a group (which has more than one) and then describing the action of that particular person/thing. Hence, the noun that follows "One of......." should be a plural noun and the verb that denotes the action of the noun should be singular.
