Dr. C. N. Annadurai at Yale University

Date: 08.01.2007

Let us see an interesting information on, one of the erstwhile chief ministers of the state of Tamil Nadu in India, Dr. C. N. Annadurai(15.09.1909 - 03.02.1969).

Dr. C. N. Annadurai, commonly referred to as Anna by Tamil speaking community, founded the most famous Dravidian party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK), in the year 1949. He served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu from 1967 - 1969. He held M. A.(Hons.) in Economics. He was a multi-faceted personality. He was a politician, erudite, diplomat, playwright, short-story writer, stage artist and so on and so forth.

He was a great orator. I even feel like genuflecting before his eloquence. Let me now narrate the following interesting information on Dr. C. N. Annadurai. Once in Yale University, USA, the following question was posed to the silver-tongued personality by a native speaker of English:

Can you construct a sentence in English by using because three times in it?

The instantaneous response from Dr. C. N. Annadurai was:

No sentence ends in because, because, because is a conjunction

Hi,

I read your post about Kannadasan, the day you published it,but I love Anna and his talents and I had to comment.

I have already read most of the posts in your blog, will read your future posts, so keep posting about Tamil.

Also, my goal is to visit one new place per month and hence you can find atmost one travelogue per month in the ideal case, but even that doesnt happen many times :-)

I was planning to revive the habit of doing posts on the books I read,I will do that.

This is also a hearsay about Anna which made me admire anna.
Once, when he was asked to say 100 words without the letter 'D', he asked the questioner to count from one to hundred. when he reached ninetynine, anna asked him to stop and to add the word "stop"to the hundredth count.

When there was a debate, an opposition member sarcastically commented anna, remarking his ailment, (at that time he was suffering from cancer and was under treatment)and went to the extent of saying "Your days are counted" to which Anna retorted "But my steps are measured". That is the wit of Anna

It is our duty to show his greatness to the pupil of present generation. Hence forth I will give some quotes from him i.e. translated in Tamil. Hi

This is Rajendran from Chennai.

Once a reporter asked Anna for his opinion on a large number of failures in a particular matriculation exam. This was his reply :

After a long consideration
I came to a conclusion
That filtration
In matriculation
Is student's botheration
Whose father's occupation
Is cultivation
For a long generation

Not only in Tamil, his mother tongue, but also in English his style is unmatched

I had been hearing a lot about beloved Anna and the comments posted from my Appa many a times, and each time I read them they seem to be new and news for me - He was a very humble human being first. So close to appa a railway employee at Guntakal - and Anna had renamed me from Subramani to Manimozhi during one of his visits to Guntakal during late 50's and early 60's

Anna is a wonderful, great, unmatched orator, but his unexpected Demise is a great loss not only for DMK,and also for the parliment speakers who find difficulties to express their views in parliment.

I am, Joe Dasarath, from Chennai, tamil nadu and rightnow I'm in SALEM, Portland, USA, writing a comment about the great leader. Anna is a snuff inhale practitioner. His style of inhaling the snuff, while speaking in public meetings, is something interesting and unknown to others. During his speech he takes a chittigai of snuff and just apply over his lefthand palm's backside and gently takes his hand to his nose and within fraction of second he rub his hand with his nose,as if he waves his hand while speaking.

No sentence ends in because, because, because is a conjunction was told by CNA humerously. Definitely he knows that the words should no repeat and the sentence should be "No sentence ends in because as it is a conjunction.
But his skill in English and Tamil is noteworthuy to read and enjoy.

Gemini Sridhar said...

No sentence ends in because, because, because is a conjunction, is not correct and good English, Though CNA knows this just for fun he made sentences with three because. Just go thro this " No sentence ends in because as it is a conjunction"

This counting answer was given to URL University students only and when he was counting 99 everyone thought he would say "hundred" which contains a "d". Due to curiosity of declaring his defeat everyone stood up.But then Anna said very casually "STOP". He is a born genius. It's very unfortunate that we lost him very early
